There is no official AP book list. The College Board does not assign the novels for AP Lit, and it says there are no official AP textbooks. So “AP books” ends up meaning two things: the novels and plays that show up on the AP English Literature exam, and the prep books students buy to review for any AP exam.
This page covers both. For AP Lit, we counted every title on the seven most recent exams the College Board has released, from 2023 through 2026, so you can see which books it keeps coming back to. For prep books, we list the current editions from Princeton Review and Barron’s for 20 subjects, checked against each publisher’s own catalog as of this update.

AP Lit book list: the 25 titles the College Board names most
The College Board does not set a required reading list for AP English Literature and Composition. Its course description tells teachers to choose the literary works themselves. The one rule in its course audit is range: short fiction, poetry, and longer fiction or drama, from before the 20th century and after it.
The closest thing to an official list is on the exam. The third essay, called the literary argument, gives you a topic and a list of about 40 works, mostly novels and plays. You can write about one of them, or about another work of fiction or drama from your own reading. The College Board’s rule of thumb is to pick something similar in quality to what you read in your AP class.
We went through all seven exams the College Board has released since 2023: two versions each from 2023, 2024 and 2025, and one from 2026. Together they list 173 different titles. Most never repeat, and 117 show up only once. Just 25 show up three or more times. Those are the ones below.

Jane Eyre is the only title on six of the seven lists. Six more are on five: Ceremony, Fences, Frankenstein, Kindred, The Awakening and Wuthering Heights. Four of the 25 are plays (Fences, A Raisin in the Sun, A Doll’s House and Macbeth), which helps if you would rather reread a play than a long novel the week before the exam.
A title that was listed often is not promised a spot in 2027. Each list is built around that year’s question, so treat this as a guide to the kind of book the exam rewards, not a prediction.

The 2026 question asked for a work with “marked tension between the old and the new.” Its list had 43 titles. Fifteen of them are in the table above. Here are the other 28.

How many AP Lit books do you need to know?
One, technically. The literary argument is a single essay about a single work. The College Board sets no minimum, and its course description tells teachers that depth of reading should not be sacrificed for breadth.
In practice you want a short bench, because you do not see the topic until the exam starts. The 2025 questions were about a character shaped by a memory and a character keeping a secret. The 2024 questions were about a character who avoids a decision and a character who feels something important is missing. A book that fits one topic may not fit the next.
Three or four works you know well enough to discuss specific scenes without the book in front of you will cover most topics. Start with what your class is already reading. You do not have to buy anything on this list to take the exam.
How to get AP Lit books without paying full price
Ask your teacher first. The College Board’s course audit says the school has to make sure each student has a copy of every required reading to use in class and at home. If a novel is assigned, a copy should be coming to you.
Older classics are free. Project Gutenberg has free ebooks of works whose U.S. copyright has expired, and that includes Jane Eyre, Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights from the table above.
For newer books, try the library before the bookstore, then a used copy. The exam does not care which edition you read, so the cheapest one is fine. Prep books are the opposite: there, the edition matters. And if you have younger readers at home, here is how to get free books for kids.
AP prep books by subject: the current editions
Princeton Review and Barron’s both publish a prep book for most of the popular AP subjects. Princeton Review numbers its editions. Barron’s now titles most of its books by exam year, so the ones marked 2027 are written for the May 2027 exams. Princeton Review’s newest editions came out in August and September 2026.

Editions and practice test counts are from each publisher’s own listing as of this update. Princeton Review’s AP page does not list a Precalculus book. Spanish Language and Culture is left out because both publishers list a new edition as coming soon, so check the edition before you buy.
Princeton Review or Barron’s?
Neither one is made by the College Board, and both cover the same exam. The difference you can check before you buy is the number of practice tests in each title.
For Calculus, Barron’s puts AB and BC in one book with 12 practice tests, while Princeton Review sells separate AB and BC books with 8 and 5. For Statistics, Barron’s lists 9 practice tests and Princeton Review lists 5. For English Literature it is 8 against 6. In European, U.S. and World History, and in Chemistry, Physics 1 and Psychology, Princeton Review lists one more test than Barron’s.
One book per exam is enough. The count matters less than whether you finish the tests you have.
Do you need the newest edition?
Buying last year’s edition used is the usual way to save, and it is a fair bet when the exam has not changed. It is a bad bet when it has. Two examples from the publishers’ own listings: Princeton Review labels its Computer Science A book as written for the new 2026 exam, and Barron’s says its new European History edition is updated for the digital exam and the latest changes to the AP History exams. An older book in either subject prepares you for the old format.
Before you buy an older copy, open the College Board’s course page for your subject and check the current exam format. When your exam is over, sell the book while it is still the current edition. AP textbooks: who picks them and where to find the list
There are no official AP textbooks. The College Board says AP courses use college-level textbooks, and that teachers choose them locally. So the first step is simple: ask your teacher which book the class uses before you buy anything.

If you are studying on your own and need a copy, treat it like any college textbook. Rent it or buy it used, and check the edition against the example list first.

What AP exams cost in 2026-27
Each AP exam costs $99 in the U.S. for the 2026-27 school year. The College Board says the price is the same as last year. You pay through your school, not on the College Board’s site, and your school can charge more to cover proctoring.

The date that matters this fall is November 13. Exams ordered after that for a full-year course cost an extra $40 each. Why pay $99 at all? A qualifying score can earn college credit or placement, depending on the college, and the College Board’s AP Credit Policy Search shows what each school accepts.
