Upside App Review: Is Upside Legit in 2026?

Upside is a legit cash back app for gas, groceries and restaurants, run by a Washington, DC company since 2016. Here is what it really pays, how cash outs work, the catches and two alternatives.

The Bottom Line

Upside is a legitimate cash back app from Upside Services, Inc. in Washington, DC that pays you back on gas, groceries and restaurant meals at participating locations. Upside says frequent users earn an average of $255 in their first year. You cash out to your bank account or a digital gift card, and a bank cash out under $10 costs $1. New users get a $5 bonus with promo code MMGCASH. The catches are that offers depend on where you live, most cash back takes two to four days to post, and an offer can be denied if you skip a step.

Yes, Upside is legit. It’s a free cash back app run by Upside Services, Inc., a Washington, DC company that launched in 2016 under the name GetUpside.

You claim an offer in the app, buy gas, groceries or a meal at that location with your own card, and get real money back. Upside says its users have earned more than $1 billion that way, and the app holds a 4.8 out of 5 on the App Store from more than 685,000 ratings.

The catches are simple. It only pays at businesses that are on Upside, most cash back takes two to four days to show up, and cashing out less than $10 to your bank costs you $1.

Upside pays cash back when you claim an offer in the app and then pay with a linked card at that gas station, grocery store or restaurant. You cash out to your bank account or a digital gift card.

Good to knowUpside runs on iPhone and Android phones in the US only. Its help center lists bank transfer and gift cards as the ways to cash out.

Is the Upside app legit?

I’ve been using Upside for years.

Upside is legit in the ways that matter. A named company runs it, stores pay for the offers, and it pays out.

Here’s the evidence, and then the catches.

Start with who runs it. Upside’s terms name Upside Services, Inc. as the company you’re dealing with, and its site lists an office at 455 Massachusetts Avenue NW in Washington, DC. Its Better Business Bureau profile shows it was incorporated in November 2015, has been BBB accredited since November 2020 and holds an A+ rating.

It’s been around a while too. Upside’s company page says GetUpside began in January 2016, signed its first gas stations that May, added restaurants in 2017 and grocery stores in 2018, and took the name Upside in April 2022. It says users have earned more than $1 billion in cash back.

Those are its own counts.

Where does the money come from? Stores pay Upside when the app brings them a sale, and part of that money becomes your cash back.

You’re never asked to pay to join.

And the app has more than a million ratings across the two app stores.

WhereRatingBased on

Ratings as shown on each listing when we checked for this update. They move over time.

Read those scores with some care. An app store rating is a quick tap, and the written reviews underneath are more mixed.

Trustpilot notes that Upside hasn’t invited customers to review it recently, so the reviews there may not be representative. It also shows that Upside has replied to 99% of its negative reviews.

And the BBB says it receives so many complaints about Upside that it publishes one of every ten.

The A+ is the BBB’s own grade, based on things like how a business responds to complaints. It’s not a customer score. Customers who reviewed Upside there gave it 1.39 out of 5.

Why some people call Upside a scam

Search for Upside and you’ll find people calling it a scam. Why? Read recent complaints on Google Play and the BBB and several tell the same story. The person claimed an offer and paid, and then the cash back was denied or sat in “needs review.”

Upside’s help center explains that status. It means Upside tried to process the offer more than once and found no matching transaction from the business.

And its own list of reasons shows how easy that is to trip.

  • You paid before you claimed. The offer has to be claimed in the app first, and Upside says prepaid receipts rarely hold the details it needs.
  • You paid with a card that isn’t in your Upside wallet. Upside matches the purchase to your linked card, and without it there’s nothing to match. Upside says you can add the card afterward and it will try again, as long as it has been 90 days or less.
  • You went to a different location. An offer is good at one address only, and the same brand down the road doesn’t count.
  • You used another discount. Upside says codes and promotions from outside the app, including cash back programs like GasBuddy or Checkout 51, can lower your cash back or void it.
  • The store was slow to send its data. Upside relies on the business to report the sale, and when that doesn’t happen you need your receipt to get paid.

So the complaints are real. On Google Play, most recent ones are about offers that were denied or got stuck.

On the BBB, most recent published complaints are about money people had already earned: balances that disappeared, accounts suspended with the balance kept, and cash outs made by someone else that Upside wouldn’t refund. Upside’s replies point to duplicate accounts, its own account reviews and its terms, which say a completed cash out is final.

The best defense against that kind of loss is a small balance, so cash out often.

For a stuck offer, the fix is boring. Claim first, pay with the linked card, and keep the receipt until the cash back lands.

But several recent reviewers say they did all three and still saw offers stall or get denied.

Upside’s help center says you have 90 days from the purchase to send a receipt or a bank statement. Its terms are stricter and say Upside doesn’t have to pay if it can’t validate a purchase within 10 days, so send the receipt as soon as an offer stalls.

One more thing trips people up. Upside doesn’t lower the price at the pump or the register. You pay the full price, and the cash back shows up in the app afterward.

The gas prices shown in the app are a guide. Upside says they can be up to 24 hours old, so check the sign before you pull in.

If those rules sound fine, Upside costs nothing to try.

Is Upside safe?

You need three things to use Upside: a phone, a personal email address and a credit or debit card added to the app’s wallet.

Upside says it doesn’t require a phone number.

The card is the part people worry about. Upside’s help center says it only sees the first six and last four digits, and that the full number is held by Stripe, the payment company.

Adding a card triggers a temporary hold of up to $2 that drops off within one to five business days.

If you cash out to a bank, the link runs through Plaid, and Upside’s privacy policy says it keeps the bank’s name and the last four digits of the account.

Then there’s your data. Upside uses your location to show nearby offers and to confirm you were at the store. It keeps your purchase history too, including totals and times, plus the receipts you upload.

Upside says it doesn’t sell app users’ personal information. Its privacy policy lists identifiers, purchase information, online activity and location data among the data shared with advertising partners for targeted ads. Precise location is listed separately and marked as not shared. You can opt out under “Your privacy choices” in the app.

Its Google Play listing says the app may share location, personal info and five other types of data with third parties, that data is encrypted in transit and that you can ask for it to be deleted.

Protect the balance yourself. Upside emails you a link to confirm every bank cash out, and its help center says it doesn’t refund a cash out that someone else makes from your account. So use a strong password and cash out often.

That’s a fair amount of data for what Upside’s own calculator puts at about $13 a month. If it bothers you, skip Upside.

What is Upside and how does it work?

Upside is a cash back app for things you buy in person: gas, groceries, restaurant meals and convenience store stops.

It’s not a coupon. You pay the normal price and earn a rebate afterward.

  1. Claim an offer. Open the app, find a nearby business and tap Claim before you buy. That locks in the offer, though another discount at the pump can still shrink what you’re paid.
  2. Go to that exact location. You have 4 hours to buy at a gas station or restaurant and 24 hours at a grocery store.
  3. Pay with a card. Use a credit or debit card that’s in your Upside wallet. Some offers also take Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay, and those always need a photo of the receipt.
  4. Wait for it to process. Most offers are checked within two to four days. Some businesses take up to ten.
  5. Cash out. Send the money to your bank account or trade it for a digital gift card.

There are daily caps too. Upside’s help center lists two offers per gas station, 50 gallons per gas offer, three offers per grocery store, one per restaurant and five offers a day across all locations.

Pay with Upside

Some offers carry a Pay with Upside badge. With those, you pay inside the app by scanning a code at the register, and the cash back is added to your balance right away.

A few gas offers let you unlock the pump from the app.

So what’s happening behind the screen? Upside’s terms say you’re buying a store gift card through Upside for the exact amount of your purchase, so the charge on your card statement starts with UPSIDE.

You may see a temporary hold that’s larger than your total until the sale settles, which the terms say typically takes one to three days. A code you don’t use is canceled on its own after four hours. Upside says your bank can take up to 7 days to return the money.

The limits are one code per location per day, five codes a day and $400 a day.

How does Upside make money?

Businesses pay Upside a share of the profit on sales the app brings them, and Upside passes part of that to you as cash back. Upside says it doesn’t make money unless its users and retailers do first. It also says that when a store would have made the sale anyway, Upside funds the offer itself.

That’s also why offers are personal. Upside’s help center says what you see depends on the stores in your area, what those stores need and your own spending habits.

Where Upside works

Upside is only available in the United States, and only as a phone app. It needs an iPhone on iOS 16 or newer or an Android phone on Android 11 or newer. It doesn’t run on tablets, laptops or desktops.

Upside says more than 100,000 stores fund offers. Its app store listing counts more than 30,000 gas station locations, with brands like Circle K, Casey’s, Shell, Gulf, Sunoco and Marathon, plus restaurants like Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Jersey Mike’s and Domino’s.

But what matters is what’s near you. Offers vary by location, so open the map in the app before you count on it.

It’s built for in-person buying. Orders through delivery apps like DoorDash, Grubhub or Uber Eats don’t earn, and Upside says online grocery orders for pickup or delivery are generally not eligible either.

How much can you earn with Upside?

We’re not going to invent a number. Upside publishes several of its own, and they don’t all match.

What you buyWhat Upside says you earnWhere it says it
Gas, first fill-upUp to 25 cents a gallonIts app store listings
Gas, on average11 cents a gallonIts friend referral page
Groceries and restaurants8% back on averageIts home page
Groceries, select markets13% back on averageIts app store listings
First year, frequent users$255 on averageIts home page and app store listings

Figures as Upside published them when we checked for this update. Upside does not say what counts as a frequent user.

The most useful number is the least flashy one. Upside’s sign-up pages include an earnings calculator, and its default example is someone who spends $280 a month on gas, $99 at restaurants and $206 on groceries and uses Upside every time. It estimates $153 in cash back for the year.

What does that work out to? About $13 a month, or roughly 2% of that spending, well under the 8% average on the home page.

The frequent user average of $255 works out to about $21 a month, and Upside’s friend referral page puts the same average at $340 a year. That page looks out of date. It still shows $300 million paid out, against more than $1 billion on the home page.

Treat all of these as marketing averages. Your number depends on how much you drive, which stores near you are on Upside and how good their offers are that day.

Offers move, and they can shrink. Upside says businesses change what they offer in the app all the time as prices, margins and foot traffic shift.

That’s why you claim first. Claiming locks in the offer you saw, not the final payout.

So is it worth it? If you drive a lot and have participating stations on your route, Upside is easy money for a minute of tapping. If you fill up twice a month, expect a few bucks.

For more ways to pay less at the pump, see our list of cash back apps for gas.

What does not earn cash back

Some things never earn, even at a participating store. When they’re part of a bigger purchase, Upside takes them out of the total before it works out your cash back.

  • Alcohol bought at convenience stores, and at grocery stores in some states
  • Tobacco and nicotine products
  • Lottery tickets, gift cards and money orders
  • Prescription medication
  • Propane, and car washes unless the offer says so
  • Sales tax, tips, service charges, delivery charges, bag charges and bottle deposits

How you pay matters too. Upside doesn’t accept cash, checks, EBT, SNAP, WIC or gift cards. It says cash purchases can’t be tied back to you, so it has no way to prove to the store that you used the app.

Can you stack Upside with a gas card or loyalty program?

Yes, with limits. You pay with your own card, so you still earn that card’s rewards on top of Upside’s cash back. That’s the easy stack, and it’s why a good rewards credit card pairs well with it.

One exception. A Pay with Upside purchase posts to your card as a purchase from Upside, not from the station or store, so it may not earn your card’s gas or grocery bonus rate.

Gas station loyalty programs and coupons are allowed too, but Upside’s help center says your cash back per gallon may be reduced to cover the cost of the other promotion. It says you’ll always get at least a penny a gallon.

Other cash back programs are where it stops. If a purchase has already been processed by a program like GasBuddy or Checkout 51, Upside says you won’t earn on it. The one GasBuddy product it works with is the Pay with GasBuddy card, which you add to your Upside wallet as a payment card.

Does Upside have a sign up bonus or promo code?

Yes. New users who enter promo code MMGCASH get a $5 bonus.

To enter it, open the Upside app and tap Account at the bottom of the home screen. Tap the icon in the top right and tap Add promo code. Then type MMGCASH and tap Done.

Enter it before you claim your first offer. Upside’s help center says many promotions only apply to your first offer, and once you claim that offer you’re no longer eligible. It also says promotions are usually applied automatically when your cash back is processed.

This bonus comes with the code. Upside doesn’t advertise it on its own site, so you won’t find it there.

Upside publishes two new user offers of its own, and they’re separate from this one. Its app store listings promise up to 25 cents a gallon on your first fill-up. Its friend referral page gives a new user an extra 15 cents a gallon on the first fill-up for joining with a friend’s code.

Upside’s help center adds that with a friend’s code the first purchase has to be $10 or more before tax and tip. It also says most codes can’t be combined, so don’t count on stacking a friend’s code with MMGCASH.

A few more rules from Upside’s help center. A promo code can only be redeemed once, and most codes expire. Codes made for Uber, DoorDash or Instacart drivers don’t work for anyone else.

Active bonuses show in the app, usually in a banner above the offer list or in your inbox, so look for yours there before your first purchase.

Hunting for sign up bonuses in general? ReferralWallet is a free directory that gathers sign up bonuses from apps and brands in one place. Each company sets and pays its own bonus, and amounts can change, so check the offer on the company’s own page before you join.

How Upside pays you

Upside’s help center lists two ways to cash out: a bank transfer or a digital gift card.

MethodMinimumWhat it costs youHow long
Bank transfer$1.01$1 on cash outs under $10. Nothing at $10 or moreUsually 5 to 7 business days
Digital gift cardSet by the brand. Most need $10, a few need $15NothingUp to 48 hours

From Upside’s help center when we checked for this update. Its terms allow up to 10 business days for any cash out.

What about PayPal? It used to be a third option. Upside’s help center says it dropped PayPal for most accounts in late 2025, that only people who had already cashed out through PayPal kept it, and that it would come off those remaining accounts on August 14, 2026. We could not find a later notice from Upside confirming that, and its terms, privacy policy and home page still mention PayPal.

So go by the cash out screen in your own app. If PayPal is listed there, you can use it. If it isn’t, your choices are a bank transfer or a gift card. New to Upside? Plan on those two.

The $1 charge is easy to dodge. Wait until you have $10, and a bank transfer costs nothing.

Upside’s site says there’s no minimum, and that’s nearly true. A bank cash out needs at least $1.01, because $1 of a small one goes to the charge.

Every bank cash out has to be confirmed. Upside emails you a link to open on your phone, which expires after 24 hours, or, in newer versions of the app, a one-time code that lasts 5 minutes.

Miss the window and you have to start again.

How long does Upside take to pay?

There are two waits. First the cash back has to land in your Upside balance. Standard offers are usually processed in two to four days, and Upside says some businesses take up to ten. If it’s been 11 days or more, contact support with your receipt.

Pay with Upside offers skip this wait.

Then there’s the cash out itself. Upside says most requests are processed within 48 hours, gift cards can take up to 48 hours and bank deposits can take up to seven business days.

Does Upside cash back expire?

Upside’s own pages give two answers. Its help center says cash back never expires as long as your account is in good standing. Its terms of service say cash back expires if your account goes six months in a row without earning from a purchase or cashing out.

The terms are the contract, so plan around them.

They also say a balance has no cash value until you redeem it, and that Upside can cancel it if it decides you broke the rules. The terms also say closing your account, whether you do it or Upside does, forfeits whatever is in it, so cash out before you close it. And they let Upside set a minimum cash out of up to $20.

Don’t let a balance sit. Once you pass $10, send it to your bank.

Use it if you drive most days and have participating stations or stores on your regular routes, and you don’t mind tapping Claim before you pay. Get the Upside app

Skip it if the map near you is empty, you pay with cash or EBT, or you don’t want an app tracking your location and purchases. An app that pays for receipts from any store will fit you better, and our list of the best money saving apps has more options.

Who can join, and what gets an account suspended

Upside’s terms set the minimum age at 16, and anyone under 18 needs a parent’s or guardian’s approval. You need to be in the United States, and you get one account. Upside treats a second account as fraud.

So sign in the same way every time. Upside’s help center says tapping a Continue with button on the sign-in screen creates a new account, and your balance won’t be in it.

Its help center lists what gets an account suspended.

  • Fake purchase records, including receipts for a purchase someone else made.
  • More than one account. It’s one per person.
  • Breaking the referral rules. Personal invite codes are for friends and family, not for posting in public.
  • Disputing a valid Pay with Upside charge. If a charge looks wrong, contact Upside before you call your bank.
  • Abuse, meaning hostile behavior toward Upside staff or other users.

Upside can suspend or close the account and cancel the balance if it decides you broke its terms. You can appeal through a form in its help center.

Support runs through the Help section of the app, where a virtual assistant answers first and Upside says a person follows up within 24 hours if needed.

There’s no phone support.

Two last rules. Cash back is only for purchases you make yourself. And the terms say any tax on what you earn is your responsibility, and that Upside may ask for a tax ID number and issue a 1099.

The terms also send disputes to arbitration and waive class actions. You can opt out, but only by written notice that reaches Upside within 30 days of the day you register.

How Upside compares with other cash back apps

Upside’s edge is cash back on gas and other in-person spending, paid to your bank account. Its weak spot is that it only works where a business has signed up. These two apps fill the gaps, and both are free to join.

Upside FAQs

Is Upside legit?

Yes. Upside is a real cash back app run by Upside Services, Inc. in Washington, DC, and it has operated since 2016, when it was called GetUpside. Upside says its users have earned more than $1 billion in cash back, and the app is rated 4.8 on the App Store from more than 685,000 ratings. The catches are that it only pays at participating businesses, most cash back takes two to four days to post, and a bank cash out under $10 costs $1.

Does Upside have a promo code?

Yes. New users who enter promo code MMGCASH in the Upside app get a $5 bonus. To enter it, tap Account, tap the icon in the top right, then Add promo code. Upside’s help center says many promotions only apply to your first offer, so enter the code before you claim one. This bonus comes with the code and is not advertised on Upside’s own site.

What is the catch with the Upside app?

It costs nothing to use, but there are rules. You have to claim an offer before you pay, buy at that exact location within the time limit and pay with a card that is in your Upside wallet. Cash back usually takes two to four days to post, offers vary by location and change often, and a bank cash out under $10 costs $1. Upside also collects your location and purchase history.

Do you actually get money from Upside?

Yes. Cash back goes into your Upside balance, and you can send it to your bank account or trade it for a digital gift card. Upside says most cash out requests are processed within 48 hours and that bank deposits can take up to seven business days. Upside’s help center says PayPal was dropped for most accounts in late 2025, so check the cash out screen in your app to see what your account offers.

Is it safe to link your card to Upside?

Upside says it only sees the first six and last four digits of your card and that the full number is held by Stripe, the payment company. Adding a card triggers a temporary hold of up to $2 that is removed within one to five business days. Upside says it does not sell app users’ personal information, but it does collect your location and purchase history.

Does Upside cost anything to use?

No. Upside is free to download and use, with no subscription. The one charge is $1 on bank cash outs under $10, and you avoid it by waiting until you have $10. Gift card cash outs carry no charge, but most brands need a $10 balance.

How does Upside make money?

Businesses pay Upside a share of the profit on sales the app brings them, and Upside passes part of that to you as cash back. Upside says it does not make money unless its users and retailers do first.

How long does Upside take to pay?

Most offers are processed in two to four days, and Upside says some businesses take up to ten. Pay with Upside offers credit right away. After you cash out, gift cards can take up to 48 hours and bank deposits up to seven business days. Upside’s terms allow up to 10 business days.

Can you use Upside with gas rewards and credit card rewards?

Yes. You pay with your own card, so you keep that card’s rewards. Gas station loyalty programs and coupons are allowed, but Upside says your cash back per gallon may be reduced, to no less than a penny a gallon. A purchase that another cash back program like GasBuddy or Checkout 51 has already processed will not earn. A Pay with Upside purchase posts to your card as a purchase from Upside, so it may not earn your card’s gas or grocery bonus rate.

Is there an app better than Upside?

It depends on what you buy. Upside is built for gas and in-person spending. For online shopping, Swagbucks pays cash back at more than 1,500 retailers. To earn without leaving the house, InboxDollars pays for surveys, games and reading emails, and it also pays for scanning grocery receipts. Our Swagbucks review and InboxDollars review cover each one, and our list of the best money saving apps has more.

Our verdict on Upside

Bottom line: Upside is legit. A named Washington, DC company has run it since 2016, stores pay for the offers, and the app carries a 4.8 on the App Store and a 4.6 on Google Play from more than a million ratings combined.

It’s also a small earner with rules. It only works where a business has signed up, and standard cash back takes days to post. Denied offers and lost balances are common complaints.

We rate Upside 4 out of 5. That’s our own rating, not an app store score.

We weighed four things: proof that it pays, the cash out rules, what a typical user earns, and how it handles your account and your data. It scores well on the first two. It loses a star for the offers that get stuck, for earnings that depend on where you live, and for the amount of location and purchase data it collects.

The way to use it is simple. Check the map and enter promo code MMGCASH for the $5 bonus. Claim before you pay and keep your receipts. Then cash out at $10.

If you already drive past a participating station, the cash back is yours for a tap. Get the Upside app
