Only a short list of big companies accept bitcoin today, and most of them do it through a payment processor called BitPay. Newegg, AT&T, DISH and AMC Theatres all take it online. Amazon, Walmart, Tesla, Microsoft, Starbucks and Home Depot do not.
Most lists you will find are out of date. Tesla only takes Dogecoin. Microsoft no longer lists bitcoin as a way to add money to your account. ExpressVPN and Wikipedia both stopped. Every answer below comes from the company’s own payment page, help center or newsroom as of this update.

This is where the answer is almost always no. None of the biggest retailers lists bitcoin on its payment page. Smaller online shops are a different story, because Shopify lets each store owner turn crypto checkout on.

Companies that do not accept bitcoin, and the ones that stopped
These are the names that trip people up, either because everyone assumes they take bitcoin or because an old announcement is still floating around.
Amazon, Walmart and the other big retailers. Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, Starbucks, Whole Foods and Apple do not list bitcoin or any other crypto on their payment pages. The only way in is a gift card bought with bitcoin from a third-party seller, which we cover below. If you just want to pay with your phone at these stores, see what stores take Apple Pay.
Tesla. Tesla’s support page says it only accepts Dogecoin, and only for Tesla Shop products marked with the Dogecoin symbol. It also says it cannot receive any other digital asset and will not return one sent by mistake. So you cannot buy a Tesla, or anything from Tesla, with bitcoin.
Microsoft. Older lists say you can load a Microsoft account with bitcoin. Microsoft’s support page now says the way to add money to your account balance is to redeem a Microsoft gift card, and bitcoin is not mentioned.
ExpressVPN. ExpressVPN says it no longer supports cryptocurrencies as a payment method, including through BitPay. Subscriptions that were bought with crypto will not renew on their own.
Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, took crypto donations starting in 2014. In May 2022 it said it would stop and close its BitPay account, after its volunteer community asked it to. Its ways to give page lists online gifts, bank transfers and stock donations, but no crypto.
Overstock and Expedia. Both show up on nearly every older list. Overstock announced bitcoin payments in 2014, but the site has since relaunched and its help center has nothing on bitcoin. We could not find a bitcoin option in Expedia’s help center either. We mark both as not confirmed instead of guessing.
Subway and Burger King. Neither lists bitcoin. Subway’s order terms name credit cards, debit cards and the Subway Card, and the Burger King app takes credit and debit cards.
One warning about directories. A store showing up in a crypto payment directory does not mean the store takes bitcoin. BitPay’s own merchant directory includes Delta Air Lines, Walmart and Uber Eats, but those entries are gift cards that BitPay sells. Delta’s payment page lists cards, PayPal and its own travel credits.
How to pay with bitcoin at checkout
Paying with bitcoin looks different from swiping a card, but it only takes a minute. You need a bitcoin wallet with a balance in it. That can be an app on your phone or an account at an exchange that lets you send bitcoin out. If you do not own any yet, start with the best places to buy bitcoin.
- Choose bitcoin at checkout. The option may be labeled Bitcoin, Crypto or BitPay. The store shows your total in bitcoin with a QR code or a wallet address.
- Scan and send. Open your wallet, scan the code and send the exact amount. Your wallet adds a network fee, and that part is on you.
- Beat the timer. The price is only held for a short window. Namecheap, for example, gives you 15 minutes to send the payment.
- Wait for confirmation. A regular bitcoin payment has to be confirmed by the network. New blocks arrive about every 10 minutes on average, and a single confirmation can come much sooner or much later. Lightning payments, the kind Square and Cash App use, settle in seconds.
A processor usually sits in the middle. A processor such as BitPay creates the invoice and collects your payment. Ferrari says the providers its dealers use convert crypto into regular currency right away. Square lets a shop choose whether to receive bitcoin or dollars.
Refunds are up to the store. A bitcoin payment cannot be reversed. You only get money back if the store sends it, and every store sets its own rule. Namecheap says bitcoin deposits are non-refundable. Steak ‘n Shake says it may refund in cash, not bitcoin. Square sellers refund bitcoin payments as Square gift cards. Read the refund line before you pay.

How to spend bitcoin where it is not accepted
A store saying no does not mean your bitcoin is stuck. Each of these gets you to the register, and each one turns your bitcoin into dollars or store credit along the way.

What PayPal and Venmo actually offer. PayPal says you can use your crypto balance for purchases at the millions of merchants that accept PayPal. At checkout you choose the crypto, review the exchange rate and select Sell. The coins PayPal names for this are bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash and PayPal USD. Venmo is different. Its crypto page covers buying, holding, selling and transferring crypto, including sending it to friends, and it says most merchants do not accept crypto payments directly.
Gift cards are the simplest fix for a single store. A debit card or PayPal is easier if you spend crypto often, because you are not buying a new card for every shop. If you would rather earn bitcoin than spend it, a rewards credit card pays you back in crypto on your everyday purchases.
Do you owe taxes when you spend bitcoin?
You can. The IRS treats bitcoin and other digital assets as property, not currency. So when you buy something with bitcoin, the IRS sees you giving up property, and that can create a gain or a loss.
The IRS virtual currency FAQ spells it out. If you exchange virtual currency you hold as a capital asset for goods, or pay for a service with it, you have a capital gain or loss. The amount is the difference between the fair market value of what you received and your adjusted basis in the bitcoin you gave up. Your basis starts with what you paid for it, fees included.
Here is what that looks like. Say you bought some bitcoin for $300, and it is worth $500 on the day you spend it on a laptop. You have a $200 gain to report, even though you never sold for cash.
How long you held it matters too. One year or less makes the gain or loss short term. More than one year makes it long term.
At tax time, the IRS digital assets page says you must answer the digital asset question on your return, and that the answer is Yes if you disposed of a digital asset in exchange for property, goods or services in any amount. Sales and other disposals of capital assets go on Form 8949. Keep a record of each purchase: the date, what you bought and what the bitcoin was worth in dollars that day.
A crypto debit card, a PayPal checkout or a gift card bought with bitcoin does not get around this. Each one still means selling or trading away your bitcoin, so track those purchases the same way.
Bitcoin payments FAQ
Directly, a narrower range than most lists suggest: computer parts at Newegg, movie tickets on AMC’s site, a DISH bill, domains at Namecheap, a Proton subscription, travel at Travala and a meal at Steak ‘n Shake. With a gift card or a crypto debit card, you can spend it almost anywhere else.
No. Amazon’s list of accepted payment methods covers credit and debit cards, a checking account, Amazon gift cards and EBT. It does not include bitcoin or any other crypto. The workaround is an Amazon gift card bought with bitcoin from a gift card seller such as Bitrefill.
