Is Optima Tax Relief legit? Yes. It’s a real, BBB-accredited tax resolution firm with an A+ rating, a 4.5 TrustScore on Trustpilot, and tax attorneys, CPAs and enrolled agents on staff.
The catch is the price. Optima doesn’t post what it charges, and most of its one-star reviews say the same thing: they paid thousands and ended up with a payment plan they could have set up themselves.
So before you sign anything, get a second free consultation from Community Tax. It costs nothing, and you’ll walk away with a second opinion on your case and a real price to hold up against Optima’s.
Optima Tax Relief vs. Community Tax
Both start with a free call. What you want to know is what the first paid step costs, and only one of them puts a number on it.

What Optima Tax Relief does
Optima is a tax resolution company based in Santa Ana, California. It says it’s been in business since 2011, has more than 350 in-house professionals, and has resolved over $3 billion in tax liabilities for clients. Those are Optima’s own numbers.
It works IRS and state tax debt. That covers the usual menu: IRS payment plans, offers in compromise, penalty abatement, currently not collectible status, levy and wage garnishment releases, lien help, audit representation and filing back returns.
It also sells tax prep and a monitoring product called Optima Tax Shield, which watches for tax identity theft and includes audit defense.
The staff page on Optima’s site names its tax attorneys, CPAs and enrolled agents, including a chief tax officer who’s a California-licensed attorney admitted to the U.S. Tax Court. Good sign. Enrolled agents, CPAs and attorneys are the people who can actually represent you in front of the IRS.
How the process works
Optima runs it in three steps.
First is a free, confidential consultation with no obligation. Then comes the investigation, where Optima starts what it calls client protection, opens contact with the IRS, reviews your tax and financial records and figures out which options you might qualify for. Last is resolution: getting you current on filings and then negotiating the deal.
Before you enroll, Optima walks you through what it calls a 12-step “disclosure gauntlet” covering the services, the fees and your right to deal with the IRS yourself. Read every one of those. That’s where the real price shows up.
What Optima Tax Relief costs
Optima doesn’t publish prices. Its FAQ says fees depend on how complex your case is and what services you need, and that you’ll get an estimate after the consultation.
So how much do people actually pay? Recent one-star reviewers on Trustpilot describe spending anywhere from about $4,000 to $10,000. One reviewer said the investigation fee alone was $495. Those are individual reviews, not a price list, but they give you a sense of the range to expect before you call.
There’s a money-back guarantee, and it’s narrow. Optima will refund what you paid for the investigation phase if you cancel within 15 calendar days of signing. It doesn’t cover anything past the investigation, or cases handled by its Immediate Action Team.
Two more things from Optima’s own fine print. It doesn’t guarantee your bill will go down at all, and penalties and interest keep adding up until the IRS is paid in full. Its FAQ also says plainly that it “may not be able to save you any money at all.”
Want a posted price to compare? Community Tax’s free consultation comes before a roughly $500 IRS investigation.
Get My Free Consultation →Optima Tax Relief reviews: what customers say
As of October 2026, Optima has a 4.5 TrustScore on Trustpilot from 5,345 reviews. About 76% are five stars (4,069) and about 10% are one star (519). Most of the rest are four stars.
The good reviews
Most five-star reviews are short and about people. Friendly reps, regular updates, staff who don’t make you feel dumb about owing taxes. Several say the IRS calls and letters stopped once Optima stepped in.
Worth knowing: a lot of them are written early in the case. One five-star reviewer said it had been easy so far but their situation wasn’t resolved yet. That’s a review of the service, not the outcome.
The bad reviews
The one- and two-star reviews tell a pretty consistent story.
- Paying thousands while hoping for an offer in compromise, then ending up with a monthly payment plan instead.
- No reduction in the amount owed after paying Optima’s fees.
- Trouble reaching the case team or getting portal messages answered.
- One reviewer said they were told they were protected and then got a garnishment on their next paycheck.
Optima replies to these publicly and says an Executive Review Board specialist will reach out about the case.
The testimonials on Optima’s site
Optima’s reviews page features video clients whose debts were settled for $50 to $3,000. Its own disclaimer says those clients may have been compensated for the testimonial and that they’re not typical results.
Same with the “America’s most trusted tax relief firm” badge. Optima discloses that it comes from a 2023 YouGov survey that Optima commissioned.
Better Business Bureau
Optima is BBB accredited with an A+ rating, listed under BBB Mountain West & Pacific Southwest. Optima’s about page says co-founder Harry Langenberg serves on the board of the Better Business Bureau of the Pacific Southwest. The A+ grades how a company handles complaints. It isn’t a grade on case outcomes.
Is Optima Tax Relief a scam?
No. It’s a real company with licensed tax pros on staff, an A+ BBB rating and thousands of happy reviews.
But legit and worth it aren’t the same thing. The biggest complaint about Optima isn’t fraud. It’s people paying a lot for an outcome they could’ve gotten cheaper, or for free.
Here’s the part most reviews skip. If you’re an individual who owes $50,000 or less in combined tax, penalties and interest and you’ve filed all your returns, you can apply for a long-term IRS payment plan online. The IRS setup fee is $29 with automatic payments. If you can pay within 180 days, there’s no setup fee at all. Penalties and interest still keep running either way.
So if a payment plan is the likely outcome, you might not need a firm at all. If you owe more, have a levy or garnishment, missing returns, or a real shot at an offer in compromise, that’s when a firm starts to earn its money.
Optima fits if
- You owe a big balance to the IRS or your state
- You’re facing a levy, lien or garnishment
- You have years of unfiled returns
- You want a large firm with in-house attorneys
Look elsewhere if
- You owe under $50,000 and just need a payment plan
- You want to see a price before the first call
- You can’t afford thousands in fees right now
- You haven’t gotten a second opinion yet
The alternative to check first: Community Tax
Community Tax does the same kind of work. It’s been around since 2010, has a team of attorneys, CPAs and enrolled agents, holds an A+ BBB rating, and says it’s helped more than 110,000 clients.
The big difference is that it tells you the first price. After a free consultation, the IRS investigation runs about $500 for individuals and about $1,000 for businesses. That’s where it pulls your IRS records and figures out which relief options you could actually qualify for.
Its tax resolution service is built for people who owe $10,000 or more. Owe less? Setting up a payment plan directly with the IRS could be the simpler route.
Why bother with a second call? Because two free consultations cost you nothing, and the second one tells you whether the first firm’s plan and price make sense. If both say “payment plan,” you’ll know to ask why it costs thousands.
Our full Community Tax review goes deeper on how it works.

Whoever you call, Optima included, ask these on the first call and get the answers in writing.
- What does the investigation cost, and what’s the total if I go ahead?
- Which option do you think I qualify for, and why?
- Could I set that up with the IRS myself?
- Who will actually work my case: an attorney, CPA or enrolled agent?
- What gets refunded if I cancel, and by when?
Be wary of anyone who promises a specific settlement on the first call. Optima’s own consumer alert page calls that a red flag too.
Bottom line: Optima is a real firm with real tax pros, and plenty of clients are happy with it. Just know you’re signing up without a posted price, and the worst reviews come from people who paid a lot for a payment plan. Get a free consultation from Community Tax too, then pick the one that makes the most sense for your case.
