Traveling to Europe doesn’t have to be as expensive as you might expect it to be. In fact, there are a number of ways that you can save money without missing out. Whether it is skipping on the travel insurance or knowing where to stay, we know how to travel on a budget. In fact, we have a guide on how to travel to Europe on a tight budget that’s allowed us to visit over 21 countries in the past two years!

Here’s what has worked for us:

Know When to Go

It may surprise you, but when you travel to Europe will have a huge impact on how much you spend while you’re there, especially when visiting the most popular tourist attractions.

During the summer months when more people are traveling, many places raise their prices, so you’re likely to pay more. By going in the late spring or early fall, you’re much more likely to save money.

Know How to Go

When staying in a city for a few days, you can save money by taking public transportation which you can do freely with a city welcome card.

When going to a new city or country, look for budget bus lines or take the night train to save money.

You can get find buses and trains going to and from nearly anywhere in Europe, making it a great budget travel option.

Know Where to Stay

It’s no secret that hotels are expensive, especially when you’re planning on being somewhere for a while.

A cheaper option is hostels, but even those can quickly eat through your travel budget. Instead, try house sitting. You’ll not only be able to stay somewhere for free, but you’ll also save money in other ways like being able to cook in the kitchen instead of eating out. House sitting might also give you the chance to stay in luxurious housing that you otherwise would not be able to afford.

It can be complication process to get started, research first and see how to become a house sitter so you can reduce your cost and have the opportunity to stay in some luxury homes!

If you do choose to stay in a hotel, you can check out as they usually have really good savings on hotels in Europe.

Know Where to Eat

There are tons of little eateries and family-run restaurants hidden around every city and town in Europe. Finding them is not only going to bring you great joy with the culinary delights that are to be found there but your wallet will also thank you.

Many of these little eateries have much cheaper options than the more well-known restaurants, so you can save money without sacrificing an authentic dining experience in whatever country you happen to be in at that time.

Know What to Do

There are a ton of free things to do in Europe, so you can easily find something to do for free no matter where you go. Look online for free activities or stop by the welcome center as soon as you arrive in a new town and they should be able to provide you with a ton of information about cheap and free activities you can enjoy.

Knowledge is power, and in this case, knowing when to travel, how to travel, where to stay and eat, and what to do will help make your trip to Europe that much more enjoyable.
